Originally we were thinking of going to Slovakia but by now we were so sick of the cold weather and snow we decided to head straight to Budapest, Hungary and onwards to Croatia.
For the entire 7h bus ride through Slovakia to Hungary we only saw lots of snow. Slovakia looks beautiful with mountains like Switzerland. Sadly when we arrived at Budapest we quickly realized that it just snowed 20cm. We have not been in any temperature higher than 1c since London 23 days ago…
For $25/night we stayed in a studio apartment in quite a central part of Pest side near lots of bars; best digs for the price yet! We weren’t feeling particularly motivated so we only spent a few hours walking around from the famous Chain Bridge to the Buda castle then to the market.
Shoes on the Danube Promenade and a sinking bus:
One good looking tourist joint:
After vegging out for several hours (mainly due to the awesome Internet speeds we were getting at our place) we headed to a “ruin bar” called Szimplakert. I guess a ruin bar is a bar in an old derelict building. Some girl working at the hostel we were staying at in Prague highly recommended it. I can only describe this place as the best student bar ever! It’s super eclectic and random and has about 7 or 8 separate bars inside it. We had a great night where after sitting on a couch for 5 mins some Brits gave us their barely used hookah, I had to entertain an incredibly drunk Irish guy ( oh the stereotype), and we had a nice chat with 3 young Iranians studying in Budapest. (they advised us against going to Iran at the present due to unfriendly authorities). Great bar and I would love to stay longer in Budapest during summer times. Their nightlife is Great and cheap!
But onwards to Croatia where we hope to stay longer. The forecast is for rain all week but at least it’s not snowing.
Travel tip: Cheapest bus was using the local Hungarian website of Eurolines.
