Xining 西寧

From Tongren we took another 4h bus ride to Xining, the capital of Qinghai province. Xining is an interesting small city as a third of the population is Hui Muslim.

We found our hostel easily and spent some time in the night market. The next day we went to the Tibetan medicine museum 藏族文化博物館. The entrance fee for students is half price for ¥30. Tibetan medicine is apparently one of the 4 ancient medicine forms. But the highlight of the museum is that it houses the world largest Thangka scroll which is 615m long!!! I wish I could have taken a video of the art piece but photo were not allowed.

Anyways the artwork was incredibly detailed and chronicled Tibetan history. It was completed in 1997 after 400 artists worked for 4 years. This is probably the first painting I have ever been overwhelmed by. It is actually a pity it’s so long because a third of the way into the painting you realized you still have 400m to go and end up rushing pass the rest. Definitely an amazing piece of art.
