New Zealand: Day 2 Hokitika to Wanaka

From Hokitika we drove to Frank Joseph Glacier. It was overcast and rainy the whole day but we managed to peek through the glacier before the weather got too bad. The walk was an easy 1.5 hours return trip.

Honestly as far as glaciers go, Canada is a lot better. The Franz Glacier has retreated so much you can barely see it. Apparently a few years ago you could hike and walk up on the glaciers. You can’t do that anymore. Global Warming, its real people.

continuing along the West Coast, we stopped by a beach that was supposedly home to the rare yellow face penguin. We didn’t spot any and got followed by swarms of sandflies instead.

Mountains and grass. A very common scene on our drive.

After a lot of driving we ended in Wanaka to a very nice sunny lake side campsite where we cooked a late dinner and snoozed. New Zealand summer nights are chilly.

Travel Tip: Our Hokitika camp site owner told us the best anti sandfly preventative is a 50:50 mix of Dettol (The cleaning agent) and Baby Oil. It seemed to have worked. Makes you greasy though.
